Definīcija:Of great importance for the purposes of slot allocation (q.v.) is the fundamental principle of historical precedence, i.e. that an airline which has used a slot as cleared by the airport coordinator in one traffic season is entitled to claim the same slot in the next equivalent season, although it does not need to use it for the same service and can use it for another service, or even exchange it with another slot held by another carrier. These rights are commonly referred to as "grandfather rights". Without this principle of historical precedence, the process of slot allocation would undoubtedly be hugely more complex than it already is, for it provides a fixed basis on which to plan for a particular season. It also enables a degree of certainty and continuity in the scheduling of services, which is arguably needed by carriers if they are to invest substantial sums in the operation of services, as well as being desired by many passengers. However, this principle clearly makes it difficult for intending new entrants to gain access to an airport at the times necessary to launch a new service, and thus lies at the heart of the problem.
