Definīcija:The AFTN operates mainly between the Air Traffic Service providers. It provides a telecommunications service between specified fixed points. Because many AFTN messages are required to be transmitted to a number of addresses and because of economic factors, a method whereby circuits are physically connected to each other to give a "Trough route" before a messages is transmitted, is not normally practicable. The AFTN is accordingly organised around a system of relay stations. Messages are transmitted forward, circuit by circuit, by successive communications centres until they reach their destination. The AFTN environment includes both application elements (i.e. text messaging) and network elements. The AFTN application is predated, and thus does not conform to the ISO OSI protocols standards. The current AFTN can operate within the ATN inter-networking architecture, however, a gateway is required. The scope of the gateway is to support present andfuture applications and to allow integration into an ISO environment and to facilitate an easy migration.
