Piemēram, 1979. gada pārtikas etiķešu direktīva attiecas uz ļoti dažādiem produktiem pārtikas sektorā un līdz ar to ir uzskatāma par horizontālu direktīvu. Turpretī Ievārījumu direktīva regulē ievārījumu un augļu konservu jomu, definējot, ko var uzskatīt par ievārījumu un ievārījuma koncentrātu (ar paaugstinātu augļu daļu sastāvā) un kādām ir jābūt etiķetēm. Definīcija:Horizontal directives are those which apply to a range of products or services: vertical directives apply to a narrower area. For example, the Food Labelling Directive 1979 applies to the labelling of many products right across the food sector, and is thus horizontal. By contrast, the Jam Directive regulates jams and preserves, laying down a recipe for what can be called jam or extra jam (with higher fruit content) and how it must be labelled: it controls jam 'from top to bottom' - and is thus vertical.
