Definīcija:The European Monetary Institute is established in accordance with Article 109f of the Treaty Establishing the European Community. The members of the EMI are the central banks of the Member States ("national central banks"). The objectives of the EMI are: 1)strengthening the coordination of monetary policies with a view to ensuring price stability; 2) making the preparations required for the establishment of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB), and for the conduct of a single monetary policy and the creation of a single currency in the third stage; 3) overseeing the development of the ECU.
